Polar bear depredation of a thick-billed murre fledgling in open water at Prince Leopold Island, Nunavut

چکیده
Sea-ice distribution and duration are declining across the circumpolar range of polar bear (Ursus maritimus), resulting in a reduced access to ice-obligate seals, its primary prey. Consequently, bears may have increased reliance on alternative food sources future. Foraging land is well documented but foraging open water less understood. We report successful depredation thick-billed murre (Uria lomvia) near Prince Leopold Island, Nunavut, discuss implications for understanding behavioural plasticity their opportunistic patterns. _______________________________ View supplementary video

Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) predation on adult thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) at Coats Island, Nunavut, Canada
Mallory et al. 2004: Polar Research 23(1), 111–114 The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is a circumpolar pinniped that has a varied diet. Evidence from numerous studies indicates that both Pacifi c walrus (O. r. divergens Illiger) and Atlantic wal rus (O. r. rosmarus Linneaus) are top predators in some trophic webs. While the majority of their diet consists of benthic invertebrates, particularly moll...
متن کاملVariation in Egg Size and Laying Date in Thick-billed Murre Populations Breeding in the Low Arctic and High Arctic
We used data collected across 28 years (1975–2002) to compare how timing of laying and egg size respond to environmental variability in two low-arctic and two higharctic Thick-billed Murre (Uria lomvia) populations. Ice conditions strongly affect food availability to marine birds in the Arctic, and the percentage of the sea’s surface covered by ice within 300 km of the breeding colony varied mo...
متن کاملOutlier analyses to test for local adaptation to breeding grounds in a migratory arctic seabird
Investigating the extent (or the existence) of local adaptation is crucial to understanding how populations adapt. When experiments or fitness measurements are difficult or impossible to perform in natural populations, genomic techniques allow us to investigate local adaptation through the comparison of allele frequencies and outlier loci along environmental clines. The thick-billed murre (Uria...
متن کاملLonger ice-free seasons increase the risk of nest depredation by polar bears for colonial breeding birds in the Canadian Arctic
Northern polar regions have warmed more than other parts of the globe potentially amplifying the effects of climate change on biological communities. Ice-free seasons are becoming longer in many areas, which has reduced the time available to polar bears (Ursus maritimus) to hunt for seals and hampered bears' ability to meet their energetic demands. In this study, we examined polar bears' use of...
متن کاملThe Arctic: Glacial Refugium or Area of Secondary Contact? Inference from the Population Genetic Structure of the Thick-Billed Murre (Uria lomvia), with Implications for Management.
Quaternary glaciations affected the distribution of many species. Here, we investigate whether the Arctic represented a glacial refugium during the Last Glacial Maximum or an area of secondary contact following the ice retreat, by analyzing the genetic population structure of the thick-billed murre (Uria lomvia), a seabird that breeds throughout the North Atlantic, North Pacific and Arctic Ocea...
